JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the western coast of Sumatra today, sending panicked people into the streets as far away as Singapore.

The quake's epicenter was beneath the sea 64 miles southwest of Bengkulu, in western Indonesia. It was at a relatively shallow 9.7 miles beneath the earth's surface, prompting a tsunami warning for all Indian Ocean nations. Indonesia's meteorological agency canceled its tsunami warning around about two and a half hours after the quake.
